Public inquest set for Chilliwack man found dead in home, ruled an accidental overdose

CHILLIWACK (NEWS 1130) — After nearly a decade waiting for answers into a 38-year-old Chilliwack man’s death, a public inquest will begin on Monday.

On Aug. 22, 2011, Gladys Scherbey found her son on his knees in front of a sofa with his head face down on the cushion with a pool of blood surrounding him.

The RCMP concluded that Corey John Scherbey died of a drug overdose. But his mother, Gladys tells NEWS 1130, she has always believed that her son’s death was a homicide.

Since Corey’s death, his parents have questioned the RCMP’s investigation.

“After fighting for nine years, going to the media — Then we couldn’t get anywhere. We wrote letters — I don’t know how many times. We asked for an inquest. We never gave up.”

Gladys says she’s disappointed the inquest will only last a few days instead of the almost two week period she says she was promised.

“This has jeopardized our witness. It’s unbelievable they can do this.”

“Police stonewall the investigation. They have no investigation. Now the coroners want to stonewall it by taking our days away.”

In his role as solicitor general this year, Mike Farnworth ordered an inquest into the death last year.

NEWS 1130 has reached out to the BC Coroners Service for comment on the public inquest’s duration.
