10 COVID-19 deaths in B.C. amid record hospitalizations, dropping daily case count

VICTORIA (NEWS 1130) — Ten more people have died from COVID-19 in British Columbia and the number of people hospitalized continues to climb, even as the daily new case count is the lowest it has been in more than a week.

A release from public health officials Friday says 516 more people have tested positive for the coronavirus in the past 24 hours, which is the lowest number recorded this week.

Hospitalizations have reached a record high, 227 people are in hospital 57 of whom are in intensive care.

The number of active cases has also reached a record-high of 7,122.

These numbers come on the heels of new province-wide restrictions introduced in an attempt to flatten the curve.

“Yesterday, new and expanded provincial health officer’s orders came into effect around the province. The orders will help us slow the spread of COVID-19; to relieve the pressure on our health-care system and reduce the risks within our communities,” reads a statement from Provincial Health Officer Dr. Bonnie Henry and Health Minister Adrian Dix.

“The provincewide orders are about all of us seeing fewer people, having safer workplaces, and pausing higher risk activities.”

The Fraser Health region continues to see the highest number of cases with 194, followed by Vancouver Coastal Health with 148.

There have been no new community outbreaks, however healthcare outbreaks have been declared at Agecare Harmony Court Care Centre in Burnaby, Discovery Harbour Care Centre in Campbell River, and Youville Residence in Vancouver.

Henry and Dix took time to reiterate orders and advice around recreation and travel.

“The orders on group physical activities pause the activities that have proven to be high risk and continue the many other fitness activities and sports that are much safer for all of us right now,” the statement reads.

“We also strongly recommend that everyone focus on essential travel only and put aside recreational or social travel for now. It is not about community boundaries, it is about only going where we really need to right now.”

They also repeated their commitment to keeping as many businesses open as possible.

The number of people who are being monitored by public health is 10,002. The recovery rate is just over 68 per cent.
