VANCOUVER (NEWS 1130) — Vancouver’s new fire chief is the first woman to have the job.
After months of searching for a replacement, Karen Fry will be stepping into the role starting Jan. 4 and bring her decades of experience to the job, according to the City of Vancouver.
She’ll be replacing Darrell Reid, who left the city earlier this year and is now the chief commissioner for Strathcona County in Alberta.
Fry is currently the chief of Nanaimo’s fire department and is a former deputy chief in Surrey.
She says it’s an honour to join Vancouver Fire and Rescue Services.
“Vancouver is a complex city,” Fry says in a release. “Public safety is my passion and I am keen to build on the already outstanding efforts of the Vancouver Fire and Rescue Services team. It has been a difficult year for emergency service workers and there will be challenges ahead, but I am committed to serving this community alongside my new colleagues.”
Deputy City Manager Paul Mochrie says the department is thrilled to have Fry join.
“She brings deep expertise and a record of effective leadership in the fire service and she will be an invaluable addition to our City Leadership Team. We have a lot of important work to tackle in 2021 and we look forward to welcoming her,” he adds.
