SURREY (NEWS 1130) — Sixteen positive cases of COVID-19 have been identified at Newton Elementary School in Surrey prompting the health authority to declare an outbreak, and order the school to close for two weeks.
The two-week school closure was announced by Fraser Health Friday evening.
“As a precautionary measure to respond to this outbreak, Fraser Health has advised the Surrey School District to close Newton Elementary School for a two-week period to break any chains of COVID-19 transmission that may be present at the school,” the statement reads.
The school will remain closed until Dec. 14.
This is the second Surrey school that has been ordered to close by Fraser Health. The first, Cambridge Elementary, is set to reopen Monday. These are the only two schools in the province that have been directed to close by a health authority.
The news of the outbreak and closure comes as B.C. continues to see record numbers of new cases and hospitalizations.
