Canucks fans throwing support behind potential replacement for ousted anthem singer

VANCOUVER (NEWS 1130) — Canucks fans are demanding someone new be made a permanent addition to the team, following the firing of former Vancouver Canucks anthem singer Mark Donnelly.

Online support has been building for Marie Hui to take the reins after Donnelly was fired for singing at an anti-mask rally this past weekend.

Hui — who occasionally sings for the team, and the Vancouver Whitecaps in Major League Soccer — says she’s been shocked at the outpour of support.

“I’m very humbled by hearing and seeing and reading all the messages. Honestly, I had no idea that so many people knew who I was … It makes me really feel like I’m doing something great for the fans of the Canucks.”

She says she would jump at the opportunity to sing the anthem regularly for the team.

“It’s always such a pleasure to sing the anthem for the Canucks. It’s an honour. And I love doing it every season,” she says.

The ongoing pandemic has been a major disruption to the world of sports, and Hui says, unfortunately, that’s impacted her career, as well.

“For myself, it hits a lot harder just because I don’t have any work right now. Christmas time and the holidays is one of the busiest times for me. And it’s been so long — it’s been since March — where all of my gigs have been cancelled. And that includes all of the gigs singing the national anthem,” she says.

Hui began working with the team in 2013 – and has also worked with the NFL’s Seattle Seahawks.
