ICBC auto insurance renewals will be available online as of May 2022

VANCOUVER (NEWS 1130) – British Columbians will be able to renew their ICBC auto insurance online starting in May of 2022.

ICBC will be launching its online insurance model at that time, with people also being able to get temporary operation permits.

“We know British Columbians want more convenience when they purchase and renew their auto insurance,” Minister of Public Safety Mike Farnworth says. He adds work continues to deliver on reductions to insurance rates across B.C.

The province is allowing for one year of its no-fault insurance program to kick in before launching the online options.

ICBC expects to make more products available online at a later date. People will still be able to renew their insurance in-person if they wish to.

Farnworth says technical and regulatory work will take place over the next year in anticipation of the online launch. Work will include conducting consultations to ensure the broker community is ready for planned changes and that regulations are worked out.

Consultations are currently underway around licence plate decals. The province says “a decision on the future of the decal requirement” is expected sometime next year.

“COVID-19 has accelerated our expansion of digital services for customers, including a shift to email and phone-based insurance transactions. Offering insurance renewals online will make buying insurance even more convenient and flexible,” says Nicolas Jimenez, ICBC president and CEO.

The online format has not yet been decided. It’s currently being developed by ICBC representatives and members of the broker community through the Online Broker Task Force.

More details are expected in 2021.
