Four COVID-19 fines handed out at Vancouver house parties

VANCOUVER (NEWS 1130) — It was another busy weekend for police in Vancouver after they handed out four COVID-19 related tickets worth $2,300 each.

According to a release, officers showed up to a noisy house party in Yaletown Friday where they found ten people inside. The host was given a ticket and the get-together was broken up.

Then, just after midnight, they were called to another party on the 58th floor of a building along West Georgia, and that tenant was also fined.

The building appeared to prove popular for partying, with officers returning to the West Georgia location on Saturday and Sunday nights. There were 10 people the first night, and 14 on the second, police say.

No one was wearing masks either or physically distancing.

Police say they responded to 2 calls in the same building (at W. Georgia): 1 Saturday night, 1 Sunday. Both calls for the same unit. Saturday had 10 people at a party. Sunday had 14 at the same unit. No one was wearing masks & that tenant got 2 tickets – 1 for each night.

In these cases, the tenant received two tickets, one for each night.

B.C.’s public safety minister suggested last week increasing fines for people who repeatedly break COVID-19 health orders.
