Maple Ridge school cohort tests negative for COVID-19 variant

VANCOUVER (NEWS 1130) – Testing has confirmed the Garibaldi Secondary School cohort is negative for a contagious variant of COVID-19.
In a joint statement Wednesday from Provincial Health Officer Dr. Bonnie Henry and Health Minister Adrian Dix, explain 81 students and eight teachers all tested negative for the B.1.1.7 variant, first identified in the U.K.
“Testing has confirmed the original person did have the B.1.1.7 variant of concern. They have since recovered and there is no longer an exposure risk,” reads the statement.

Fraser Health sent out a notification Sunday, explaining someone at the high school tested positive for the virus and was a close contact of a person infected with the variant.

Henry and Dix also reported 414 new COVID-19 infections, and that 16 more people have died because of the virus.
As immunizations continue across the province, 142,146 doses of COVID-19 vaccines have been given to British Columbians.
“Until the COVID-19 vaccines are available for all of us, let’s choose less and choose small. This is the path to get to the brighter days ahead.”

Eighty of the 278 patients in hospital with COVID-19 are in intensive care.
There are 4,426 active cases of the virus and 7,049 under public health monitoring.
Health officials note the latest outbreak at Burnaby Hospital. There are currently nine hospitals and 24 long-term care and assisted-living homes with active cases.
