VANCOUVER (NEWS 1130) — As a professional interviewer for over a decade on Breakfast Television Vancouver, Riaz Meghji knows a thing or two about asking questions. In his new book, Every Conversation Counts: The 5 Habits of Human Connection That Build Extraordinary Relationships, the former TV host shares some of his trade secrets.
“I’ve always been fascinated by the how and why of how we truly connect as human beings,” he admits. “The intention behind this book was to give people tips, ideas, and tactics to put themselves out there, to ask the questions that create breakthrough moments.”

Meghji maintains he approaches all his interactions the same way. “Consistency builds trust,” he says. “I’m also fully aware that there will be some [interactions] where there isn’t a connection made, but if the intention is there, that opportunity to potentially change somebody’s life, maybe even your own, creates an opportunity for growth.”
His five habits include listening without distraction, making your small talk bigger, putting aside your perfect public persona, being assertively empathetic, and making people feel famous.
Another key piece of advice is to stay curious. “One of the ideas I would always champion is to maintain a beginner’s mindset,” he says. “And if we do that, whether you’re an interviewer or whether you’re meeting people for a living or just looking at the loved ones in your life … if we maintain that beginner’s mindset, we can just learn so much from the people around us.”

Ultimately, he wants to help the reader connect on a much deeper level.
“It is so easy to overlook what real connection is all about. I hope people walk away with this, with a focus on, in every conversation, ‘How can I make an emotional connection?’ Less words more emotion. And if we’re able to do that, I think good things will come, not only in your conversations but in the relationships you can build.”
