VANCOUVER (NEWS 1130) – The strange death of Vancouver’s Elisa Lam at a Los Angeles hotel has appeared on lists of unsolved mysteries for years, and the bizarre events will once again be dissected in a Netflix documentary released Wednesday.
Crime Scene: The Vanishing at the Cecil Hotel dives into the disappearance and death of the UBC student in 2013. Her body was found in a water tank above the Cecil Hotel in Los Angeles, where she had been staying.
She was 21 when she travelled to L.A. on Jan. 26, 2013. Lam’s family reported her as missing after they didn’t hear from her on Feb. 1.
With no sign of Lam by Feb. 15 of that year, the Los Angeles Police Department released bizarre surveillance video from the hotel elevator that has made the rounds worldwide.
It was the last footage of Lam.
Her body was found four days later in the water tank after guests at the hotel had complained about the water pressure, with some saying the water had an unusual taste and colour.
How Lam’s body ended up on top of the hotel in the water tank has never been solved, leaving room for speculation.
Her death was ruled as an accidental drowning, and her bipolar disorder was listed as one of the factors.
The Cecil Hotel – now known as Stay on Main – is infamous for a long history of dark crimes, violent deaths, and suicides.
