Cougar seen laying in Port Moody yard killed

PORT MOODY (NEWS 1130) – The B.C. Conservation Officer Service says a cougar that was spotted hanging out in a Port Moody yard over the weekend has been killed.

The service says its officers were called out after three cougars were spotted in the area of Bert Flinn Park and wouldn’t leave, even when they arrived on scene.

Later on Sunday, due to what the service calls “an escalating public safety risk,” one cougar was tranquillized and euthanized near Ioco Road.

On Monday, Port Moody Police told NEWS 1130 they believed the cat found in the yard may be the same one responsible for an attack on a small dog on a leash near Foxwood Drive last week, but the service isn’t confirming that.

That dog had to be put down because of its injuries.

Police are advising people living in the area to be on alert.

“If they’re out, walking in the trails — even walking in their neighbourhoods, and especially if they’re walking their pets — they need to be vigilant. They need to be aware of their surroundings,” Sgt. Ian Morrison said.

A cougar attack also killed a German Shepherd puppy in Anmore on Thursday. The owner had just received the three-month-old pup a week before, with the hopes of training it as a search and rescue dog.

It’s unclear if this was the same cougar.
