Tent destroyed by fire at Vancouver’s Strathcona Park, no one injured

VANCOUVER (NEWS 1130) — One tent has been completely destroyed but no one is injured after a fire at Strathcona Park sent flames and thick plumes of smoke shooting into the air Friday.
Vancouver Fire and Rescue Service was called to the park around 4 p.m. where they found a “fully-involved” tent.
“It was about 200 to 250 metres inside the park. There were no injuries and or fire investigators on scene now investigating, along with VPD,” says Assistant Chief Dan Stroup.
Crews were able to extinguish the fire quickly before it could spread to other tents.

A fire was also put out last Saturday at the park where an encampment was set up in June of 2020 by people experiencing homelessness after an injunction forced people off of a property next to CRAB Park on Vancouver’s waterfront. Residents who had moved to the CRAB Park area had been forced there after Oppenheimer Park was shut down by the city and Park Board.
The city has recently announced several sites including the shuttered Army and Navy Department Store, and a Days Inn on Kingsway have been secured as sites to shelter those currently in the park. No date has been set for people to move out of the park and into these sites.
