VANCOUVER (NEWS 1130) — A new, 50,000-square-foot facility for children and youth interested in the arts opened its doors on Granville Island Saturday.
Run by the non-profit Arts Umbrella, it features six dance studios, four theatres, music and film studios, and 10 art and design studios.
CEO Paul Larocque says it will serve people from the ages of two to 22.
“For the last several years we have been repurposing this 50,000 net, square-foot space into a state-of-the-art, arts education centre for young people,” he says.
“It’s a remarkable building certainly within Canada but also North America. We feel so grateful to have this opportunity to have this building here in Vancouver, for young people across Metro Vancouver.”

LaRocque estimates up to 15,000 young people will access the space each year.
“Not only will Arts Umbrella grow with in the laws of this extraordinary building, but it also increases our capacity to serve vulnerable children and youth through a growing network of community centres, neighbourhood houses, healthcare facilities, and hundreds of schools,” he says.
The centre’s programs will allow chiuldren and youth to get creative through photography, animation, woodworking, and live performance.
