B.C.’s premier gets first dose of AstraZeneca COVID-19 vaccine

VICTORIA (NEWS1130) – He says he barely felt it. B.C. Premier John Horgan has received his first dose of the AstraZeneca vaccine at a Victoria-area pharmacy.

“If my influenza shots were that painless, I’d get them more readily too. Although, I get them every year anyway,” he quipped on Friday.

In getting the first dose of the two-shot AstraZeneca vaccine, which has been under scrutiny over a possible link to rare blood clotting, Horgan also says he wants people to know the shot is safe.

“I’ve just had it applied to myself. My wife’s slated to get her shot next week. I want all British Columbians [to know]: Take advantage. When you get the call, when you get the opportunity, get vaccinated,” he said.

The premier also took time to acknowledge the weather forecast for this coming weekend.

“Enjoy the weekend [but] stay away. Physical distance is critically important. It’s going to be a beautiful weekend out there. Reduce your contacts. Stay as far away from people as possible,” he said.

John Horgan’s vaccination comes as roughly 27 per cent of people across B.C. have received at least one of their COVID-19 shots.

British Columbians aged 45 and up can register to book a vaccination appointment, as can Indigenous people aged 18 and up.

Those between the ages of 55 and 65 can call a pharmacy to schedule a vaccination with the AstraZeneca shot.
