B.C. MLA Mike Bernier, family test positive for COVID-19

DAWSON CREEK (NEWS 1130) —  A B.C. MLA from Dawson Creek — a COVID-19 hot spot — has tested positive for the virus, as have his wife and adult child.

Mike Bernier, who represents Peace River South, shared the news in a statement Sunday.

“We are all presently self-isolating and currently everyone is doing well. This came as a shock to all of us as we have been following all the public health guidelines, such as physical distancing, wearing masks, and avoiding indoor gatherings,” he writes.

Noting he has received his first dose of the vaccine, he says he contracted the virus before getting the shot. he adds he was not infected when last at the legislature between April 19 and 22.

He says the fact that he caught the virus while following public health orders and guidance underscores how crucial it is for people to protect themselves by getting immunized.

“I want to encourage everyone to get their vaccination as soon as possible. I caught the virus while following all protocols. The vaccine – any of the vaccines available – offer an added layer of protection. It will help all of us get back to a normal life,” he writes.

“For the coming days, I will be spending my time with my family, following all the directions of public health officials. My family remains my priority.”
