Amazon says 2,000 jobs coming to Lower Mainland with company expansion

VANCOUVER (NEWS 1130) – The COVID-19 pandemic has put many people out of work, but 2,000 new jobs are coming to our region.

Amazon has announced plans to open five new sites on the Lower Mainland this year, including a robotics fulfillment centre at the Port of Vancouver, which will employ 1,000 people. That facility is expected to be open in late 2021.

There will be a new sorting centre, also opening in late 2021, in the City of Langley. More than 500 people are expected to work there.

There will also be new delivery stations in in Langley Township, Delta, and Pitt Meadows.

On Friday, Amazon also announced its annual Prime Day marketing event in Canada is being put on hold this year, amid ongoing COVID-19 outbreaks at its facilities in Ontario’s Peel Region.

The postponement of the event was put in place to protect the health and safety of employees and customers, Amazon said in a notice to sellers obtained by The Canadian Press.

Amazon Canada’s Prime Day, an online shopping event featuring discounted products, was held on Oct. 13 and 14 last year but had been held in July prior to the pandemic.

“We will… work with teams to determine the next best steps for Prime Day 2021,” the company said.
