Surrey gurdwara hosts COVID-19 vaccination clinic

SURREY (NEWS 1130) — A COVID-19 vaccination clinic was held Friday at a popular gurdwara in Surrey.
About 400 people, all over the age of 30, who live in identified COVID hotspots at Gurdwara Dukh Nivaran Sahib were able to get their jab.
Kamal Gill, a nurse who participated, says they’re hopeful being at the temple will make those in the Punjabi community more comfortable getting the shot.
“I think coming into a place of worship it’s always nice, you feel comfortable. You know who to reach out to in case you don’t know how to do something,” she says.

Gill says they specifically brought nurses to the event that speak Punjabi, to make the experience easier to navigate for many showing up.
“Last week when we were here we made hundreds of appointments for people who didn’t know how to register, didn’t have access to a phone or computer, because a lot of the older population don’t have access to a computer or don’t have phones on them,” she notes.
The event was put on by Fraser Health’s outreach program, which aims to vaccinate as many people as possible in high-transmission neighbourhoods. In those neighborhoods — 17 in total on the Lower Mainland — people 30 and over are being invited to book appointments to get immunized.
