Fundraiser launched for Surrey condo residents forced out by fire in Fleetwood

SURREY (NEWS 1130) – Money is being raised to help residents of a Surrey apartment building that was destroyed in a massive fire over the weekend.

Dean Barber with the Fleetwood Business Improvement Association says the building at 84th Avenue and 160th Street had just put in a new roof, and a $550 special levy from every suite is still due.

“They just got a brand new roof on the building. And when you’re in a strata and this type of thing happens, the property owners have to pay into a special levy to cover the cost of the roof. Well, the first payment of the roof levy is June 1,” Barber told NEWS 1130.

“And so these people have been displaced. They’ve got to find a new place. And all of a sudden they’ve got to make a payment for a roof that doesn’t exist.”

A GoFundMe campaign has been set up to help cover the cost of each suite’s levy.

Barber says at least 10 units in the building didn’t have condo insurance, and a number of pets are also still missing.

The fire broke out at the 56-unit building on Saturday, displacing dozens of people. The cause of the fire remains unknown, but no injuries have been reported.

“All donations will go directly to the strata corporation, and will significantly assist affected families who are already greatly struggling with the impacts of the fire and loss of property and belongings,” the GoFundMe page reads.

The goal is to raise $30,000.
