Highrise fire in Vancouver’s West End contained to one suite, no injuries

VANCOUVER (NEWS 1130) — A fire on the 14th floor of a highrise in Vancouver’s West End sent smoke billowing over the city Thursday, but firefighters say it was contained before it could spread to other suites.
Trevor Connolly, Assistant Chief of Operations for Vancouver Fire Rescue Services says they got the call around 6 p.m..
When crews arrived at the building at Comox and Thurlow Streets they found a corner suite completely engulfed in flames.
“They quickly identified the suite, which they entered to find fully involved in fire — so heavy, thick black smoke, lots of flame, lots of heat,” he tells NEWS 1130.

Video posted to social media shows flames shooting out of the windows of a corner unit of the building. Connolly says there was “moderate smoke in the hallway, but they were able to douse the flames quickly. A ladder truck sprayed the outside the building to prevent the fire from spreading through the exterior.

By about 7:30 p.m., the smoke had cleared. No one was home at the time the fire broke out and Connolly says no one was injured.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation, but it is not considered suspicious.
