Nelson grad prank leaves school in chaos

NELSON (NEWS 1130) – Four students were arrested after several floors of a Nelson school were vandalized over the weekend in what police are describing as a grad prank gone wrong.

The Nelson Police Department says a few students broke into L.V. Rogers Secondary School late Sunday for “what seems to have been intended as a graduation prank (that) soon got out of hand.”

Photos show hallways and rooms covered in shaving cream, glitter, and other substances, including “80 raw chicken eggs.”

“Officers attended to find the basement, main level and third floor defaced,” police say, adding, “The school principal was summoned to the school in order to see the extent of the vandalism.”

After viewing the damage, it was decided that the school would be closed to students until everything was cleaned up and returned to normal.

Investigators say the four students arrested in connection with the vandalism have since been released. Charges are being considered for some of them.

Staff from across the district were called in to “help rectify the mess,” and several parents also volunteered. In all, it’s said up to 45 people worked to “restore the school to a point that it was suitable for students.”

Students were not allowed to help, due to what investigators call health and safety concerns.

Police say the majority of the students believed to have been involved have agreed to take part in the department’s Restorative Justice Program. The program’s director is working with the school and parents to come up with “a resolution to this event”.
