North Vancouver public art installation nominated for international award

VANCOUVER (NEWS 1130) – An illuminating piece of artwork at the Lonsdale Quay bus exchange in North Vancouver is up for a prestigious international award.

Sea Change is one of 100 large-scale community artworks nominated for a People’s Choice CODA-award. The annual awards, given out by CODAworx, are presented to those who successfully integrate commissioned art into interior, architectural, or public spaces.

Sea Change is an interactive light-based piece located in the transit tunnel connecting a covered bus loop with the street. Created by Jill Anholt, it’s made up of a series of LEDs and textured mirror-polished stainless-steel panels. When a pedestrian or cyclist enters the tunnel, a wave of intense blue or green light is triggered to ripple across the wall in front of them.

“The work celebrates the area’s connection to its waterfront by marking the location of the historic tideline within the site and by serving as a symbolic reminder of the importance of water to humanity,” an overview of the piece on the CODAworx website states. “Transforming a dark and menacing underpass into a dynamic and engaging experience for viewers, the artwork mimics the ephemeral and magical feeling of being immersed within a body of water as if light rays were penetrating an undersea world through water ripples above the tunnel.”

Two weeks of public voting start Friday and run until June 30.

The two projects that collect the most online votes will be dubbed People’s Choice and will be announced in the August issue of “Interior Design” magazine.
