BURNABY (NEWS 1130) – Voters in Burnaby are gearing up for a civic by-election on Saturday. They will be filling two seats left vacant after the passing of longtime councillors Nick Volkow and Paul McDonell last year.
Volkow, who served eight terms, died in June 2020 after a lengthy battle with cancer.
McDonell, who served four consecutive terms, passed away a month after Volkow. Before serving on council, McDonell had a 35-year career in firefighting.
Fourteen candidates have put their names forward for Saturday’s by-election, including Mike Volkow, the son of the late Volkow.
Polled open at 8:00 a.m. and close at 8:00 p.m.
Earlier this week, the City was criticized by disability advocates for failing to provide a mail-in voting option. Burnaby says it will revisit the issue in time for the next municipal election, set for Oct. 15, 2022.
