Burnaby appears to have two new council members

BURNABY (NEWS 1130) — It seems like the two newest city councillors in Burnaby will be Alison Gu and Mike Hillman.

Results are unofficial, but voter turnout at this weekend’s by-election in Burnaby is listed at eight per cent.

That’s down considerably from the 33 per cent who voted in the city’s last civic election.

Once confirmed, the elected councillors in Burnaby will serve on council until the next scheduled local election.

The councillors will be filling two seats left vacant after the passing of longtime councillors Nick Volkow and Paul McDonell last year.

Volkow, who served eight terms, died in June 2020 after a lengthy battle with cancer.

McDonell, who served four consecutive terms, passed away a month after Volkow. Before serving on council, McDonell had a 35-year career in firefighting.
