ABBOTSFORD (NEWS 1130) – The young man who killed a teenaged girl and badly injured her friend in a stabbing at an Abbotsford high school in 2016 will learn on Wednesday how long he’ll have to spend behind bars before he’s eligible for parole.
Gabriel Klein has received the automatic life sentence in the second-degree murder of Letisha Reimer, and the aggravated assault of another teen. He was found guilty in March 2020.
Klein walked into Abbotsford Senior Secondary in November 2016 hours after surveillance video showed him stealing alcohol from a liquor store and a hunting knife from a sporting goods store.
He later admitted to stabbing Reimer.

Klein’s lawyer has argued because of his clients’ schizophrenia, he should not be held criminally responsible for the crimes. However, the judge ruled he is in fact to blame for what he did, saying there was no evidence in the case that mental issues affected Klein’s ability to see the consequences to his actions, and that his conduct was incomprehensible.
Klein applied for a hearing over criminal responsibility as sentencing was set to begin in September. In April 2021, the B.C. Supreme Court rejected claims he suffered a mental disorder that made him unable to appreciate the nature of his actions, or that they were wrong.
Klein’s parole eligibility will fall somewhere between 10 and 25 years.
