Science World allowing larger groups, as B.C. COVID-19 rules ease

VANCOUVER (NEWS 1130) – Now that COVID-19 restrictions have been further eased, Science World is expanding its operations to accommodate more people.

The landmark Vancouver attraction is allowing groups of up to 10 people. The Green Roof Terrace, which overlooks False Creek, will be able to accommodate weddings of up to 50 people.

Masks are still mandatory for staff and visitors aged six and up. Visitors are also asked to maintain physical distancing with others.

On July 1, B.C. entered Stage 3 of its restart plan, which allowed for larger gatherings and also did away with the provincial mandate for masks in indoor, public settings. However, masks are still recommended for people aged 12 and up who are not fully vaccinated. Organizations and businesses are also permitted to have mask policies, if they choose to.

Science World is open seven days a week, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., with some early admission times for members. It says it’s best to book a visit in advance, noting walk-ins are subject to availability.

Last month, Science World announced its “Fund the Future” campaign, aimed at bringing in enough cash to digitize its current exhibits and programs, as well as create new displays and spruce up existing ones.

The COVID-19 pandemic has been tough on the non-profit organization, with revenue dropping $13 million in 2020.

Science World says 85 per cent of its revenue comes from ticket sales and events.

Over the course of the pandemic, the organization has been running a campaign called The World Needs More Nerds, in an effort to encourage people to visit and donate to its exhibits and learning programs. The campaign features “superstar nerds” such as Provincial Health Officer Dr. Bonnie Henry, Primatologist and Anthropologist Dr. Jane Goodall, and Astronaut Chris Hadfield.

In May, Science World named Henry its sole 2021 “Friend of the Society,” saying it is grateful for B.C.’s top doctor’s help with its fundraising efforts.
