Barrier-free community fridge set up in Vancouver

VANCOUVER (NEWS 1130) — A new community fridge in Vancouver is getting a lot of support from many locals.

The Local Open Access Fridge (LOAF) allows people to take what they need, and to leave what they can.

The creators say it’s important that people can access healthy food and supplies barrier-free, with no judgment, or policing of participants’ use.

“I think it’s amazing, there’s a lot of hungry people out there,” a resident in Vancouver’s Sunrise-Hastings neighbourhood said about the new project.

The fridge is stocked with all kinds of items such as fruits, vegetables, eggs, bread, and more. There is also a deep freezer to allow for more long-term storage.

People can also take some grab-and-go foods like granola bars.

Another resident says it’s so important for the neighbourhood to uplift everyone. “I think it adds to the community because it’s bringing food security to the community…food should be accessible to those who can’t afford to, because it’s expensive,” they said.

Donations are accepted, and there is more need for essential items such as baby food, diapers, toothpaste, and menstrual products.

It’s open from 10 a.m. to 11 p.m. at 2297 East Hastings, and more volunteers are needed.

Organizers are hoping to add more locations.
