B.C. records 204 COVID-19 cases, highest in nearly two months

VANCOUVER (NEWS 1130) – B.C. has recorded its highest daily COVID-19 case count in nearly eight weeks, with most of the new infections happening in the Interior Health region.

On Thursday, the province reported 204 cases in the past 24 hours. It is the highest figure since June 5.

More than half (107) of the new COVID-19 cases were recorded in the Interior Health region, which includes the Central Okangan, where the an outbreak has been declared and rules regarding mask wearing are back in place.

Unvaccinated travellers are advised against visiting that part of the B.C. Interior, which includes Kelowna.

The Fraser Health Authority reported 58 new infections, while Vancouver Coastal Health recorded 23. There were 14 new cases in the Island Health Authority and two in Northern Health.

Across B.C., there are 1,055 active cases, with Interior Health accounting for 600.

Hospitalizations have risen from 47 to 51. The number of patients in the ICU is unchanged at 20. There have been no COVID-related deaths in the past day.

On Tuesday, B.C. announced an overhaul to its COVID-19 vaccination program, putting a particular focus on people who have not yet received any doses. As of Thursday, the province reported 81 per cent British Columbians aged 12 and up have now received at least one dose, and 64.1 per cent have received their second.

The province says a total of 6,732,309 doses of Pfizer-BioNTech, Moderna, and AstraZeneca COVID-19 vaccines have been administered.
