B.C. records 742 COVID-19 cases over long weekend

VANCOUVER (NEWS 1130) – Hundreds of British Columbians tested positive for COVID-19 over the B.C. Day long weekend, the province recording one death.

There were 160 new cases on Saturday, 196 on Sunday, 185 on Monday, and 201 on Tuesday.

Once again, Interior Health recorded more than half of the new cases, with 395 over the past four days. That region also has most of the province’s active cases with 847 of 1,544.

Last week, health officials declared a COVID-19 outbreak in the Central Okanagan, which includes Kelowna, due to a surge of cases in the area. They are also advising unvaccinated people avoid travelling there.

Over the long weekend, Fraser Health saw 165 new infections, while Vancouver Coastal Health recorded 115. There were 24 in Northern Health, 42 in Island Health, and one infection in someone who lives outside of Canada.

The number of British Columbians hospitalized with the illness has risen from 47 to 53. Of those patients, 19 are in the ICU compared to 16 on Friday.

The single death over the weekend brings B.C.’s total to 1,772.

As of Tuesday, more than two thirds (69.7 per cent) of eligible British Columbians have received two doses of a COVID-19 vaccine. The percentage of people who have received at least one dose stands at 82.3.

The outbreaks at Holyrood Manor and Nelson Jubilee Manor are still active.

Since December 2020, the Province has administered 6,902,320 doses of Pfizer-BioNTech, Moderna, and AstraZeneca COVID-19 vaccines.
