Stanley Park coyote bites man in fifth attack in a week

VANCOUVER (NEWS 1130) — A man was bitten by a coyote in Stanley Park Tuesday evening while walking near Second Beach, and conservation officers are again warning people not to visit amid a rash of these incidents.

The 69-year-old man was approached by the coyote while on a trail. This is the fifth coyote attack in the last week, during a summer in which these incidents have become common. So far, four coyotes have been euthanized due to aggressive attacks.

The Conservation Officer Service has received another report of a coyote attack in Stanley Park,” reads a Facebook post, noting the man did not report the incident immediately.

“The COS continues to strongly urge the public to stay out of Stanley Park. If you are in the park use abundant caution, as there is a high risk of encountering an aggressive coyote – particularly during dawn or dusk hours, when coyotes tend to be more active.”

Concerns about these coyote encounters forced the Vancouver Park Board to close trails along the west side of the park in July and again earlier this month.

Conservation officers urge people to report aggressive coyote encounters to 1-877-952-7277 as soon as possible.

Tips on how to handle a coyote encounter include shouting, waving one’s arms, and throwing things at the animal. Running, or turning one’s back on a coyote is never a good idea.
