Climate change protest to be held in Downtown Vancouver

VANCOUVER (NEWS 1130) — Climate change protests are planned across Canada Wednesday, and they are expected to cause some traffic headaches.

In B.C., people are promising to gather in several locations, including Downtown Vancouver near W Georgia Street and Hamilton Street, Bear Creek Park in Surrey, and in Mill Lake Park in Abbotsford.

The event begins at noon, and could last throughout the day. It’s unclear if protesters are expecting to block traffic, or will march, but drivers and those needing to access those areas should be prepared for delays.

The protests are in response to the federal election, and come just hours ahead of the leaders’ debate. Hosted by U.S.- based environmental group 350.org, protesters say they want the climate emergency to be a top election issue.

“This will be the first election to take place while catastrophic climate-driven wildfires are blazing across the country as Canada faces one of the worst wildfire seasons on record and as communities recover from unprecedented heat, flooding, and droughts,” organizers wrote on their website.

Last week, two protests over two days led to heavy traffic delays in Vancouver, and lengthy bridge closures.

One of the protests was organized by an anti-vaccine, anti-COVID-19 restrictions group. A similar protest is planned for Wednesday afternoon in front of Vancouver City Hall, which is just blocks from Vancouver General Hospital.

      ‘We Are All Essential,’ is calling for business owners, employees, and consumers to join together to “reject the tyranny of vaccine passports,” urging people to “unite businesses for freedom of choice.”

      It comes one day after B.C.’s new Vaccine Card registration went live online, and was so popular that some users had to wait more than an hour to sign up for their card. However, by Wednesday morning there were minimal wait times on the website.

      They are also planned in Nanaimo, Kelowna, Penticton, Kamloops, Fort St. John, in B.C. Nationally, demonstrations are set to take place in parts of Alberta, Saskatchewan, Ontario, and Quebec.
