Terry Fox Run continues virtually for 2021

The Terry Fox Run is coming up this weekend, and the brother of the man himself has a few words on what to expect.

Fred Fox says, as it was in 2020, the annual charity run will be mostly virtual this year, especially in the Lower Mainland.

“There might be half a dozen small communities in the interior that with smaller groups, depending on the local health authority, restrictions, and protocols, that will be in person, but for the most part, right across Canada, we’re just asking people to go online,” he says.

You can do anything from walking to biking or running anywhere you feel comfortable, he adds.

Even though the pandemic has put a damper on the annual run’s plans to meet up in person, Fox notes that “cancer doesn’t take a break.”

“People are still diagnosed with cancer every day,” he says. “People who support the Terry Fox Run and cancer research have been amazing in the 41 years, continuing Terry’s dream.”

The foundation raised $17 million last year, down from their usual $22-24 million.

Fox has hope the virtual run will go well this year too.

“It was quite amazing really to see the social media side of things at the Terry Fox Foundation,” he says.

He’s looking forward to seeing other runners wearing the event’s special t-shirts while they’re out participating too.

Participants can visit the website to register, create a fundraising page, or support somebody else who’s running. All donations go towards supporting cancer research.
