VANCOUVER (NEWS 1130) — Days after the election, the tight race for Vancouver-Granville has finally come to an end in the Liberals’ favour.
All mail-in votes have been counted for the riding and Liberal Taleeb Noormohamed has won with 34 per cent of the vote.
Noormohamed’s closest challenger for the riding, New Democrat Anjali Appadurai, earned 33 per cent of the vote.
At one point the pair was separated by just one vote and the outcome of that race could not be determined until all of the mail-in votes were tallied.
Noormohamed has faced controversy during the election, when NEWS 1130 first reported he bought and sold at least 42 properties in Metro Vancouver within the last 17 years. Of those, 21 homes were bought and sold within a year, in stark contrast to his party’s promise in this year’s federal election to crack down on real estate speculation with an anti-flipping tax.

Noormohamed made $4.9 million in profits on those property sales, before transaction costs are factored in. Housing activists have criticized Noormohamed’s real estate activity as consistent with flipping behaviour.
The riding was held by former justice minister Jody Wilson-Raybould, who ran as an Independent last time around, but she didn’t run this time.
Races in Richmond Centre and Nanaimo-Ladysmith are also yet to be called.
