One arrested at climate protest in Vancouver on Saturday

VANCOUVER (NEWS 1130) — A 26-year-old demonstrator was arrested at a climate change protest at Main and Broadway on Saturday.

About 75 people led by the climate action group Extinction Rebellion marched from Prince Edward Park to the intersection earlier in the day, disrupting traffic for about an hour and a half.

“After protesters were given time to express their views, VPD officers asked the group to disperse. Most of the crowd left the area, except for one 26-year-old woman,” reads a statement by the Vancouver Police Department.

“The woman was arrested for mischief and released pending a future court appearance.”

The Saturday event is just one of many leading up to a Canada-wide demonstration by Extinction Rebellion in October. It wasn’t the first one to happen in Vancouver either. Throughout the second week of September, they rallied in front of the office of George Heyman, Minister of Environment and Climate Change Strategy in solidarity with protestors at the Fairy Creek Blockade.

Extinction Rebellion says their events are family-friendly but include civil disobedience.
