One person dead in Sunshine Coast helicopter crash

KILLAM BAY (NEWS 1130) – One person is dead after a helicopter crashed near Killam Bay on the Sunshine Coast Monday.

Killam Bay is about halfway between Sechelt and Powell River.

Officials say the Joint Rescue Coordination Centre and Coast Guard were both notified after a distress call came into the RCMP West Coast Marine Section around 2 p.m.

The person killed was the lone occupant of the helicopter. The RCMP says witnesses were first to get to the helicopter debris.

Though a search was conducted, a body has not yet been recovered.

“RCMP is working with several partners on this investigation to determine what caused this crash including, Coast Guard, transport Canada, WorkSafe BC and the BC Coroner’s Service,” said Sgt. Chris Manseau.

Transport Canada is working to recovery the helicopter. However, the depth of the water, which is believed to be more than 500 feet, is challenging the effort, according to Manseau.

The RCMP has not released the pilot’s identity, but says he is not a Sunshine Coast resident.
