Bus drivers’ union unsure about TransLink vaccine mandate

VANCOUVER (NEWS 1130) — Saying it wasn’t consulted ahead of time, the union representing bus drivers in Metro Vancouver isn’t ready to disclose whether it’s going to get behind a new vaccine mandate from TransLink.

Unifor 1-11 President Balbir Mann says his union only found out about TransLink’s plans on Friday.

The union has 4,200 memberships, and Mann wants to be sure “everybody is represented equally” in their final decision about the vaccine mandate.

“We haven’t seen any documents yet on how they’re going to roll it out, and we just heard — just like everyone else — that this policy is coming for mandatory vaccination,” said Mann.

Until now, TransLink has allowed drivers to work without masks, provided they’re behind plastic screens on the buses.

Mann has unanswered questions about the policy, which he’s hoping the union will have answers to by next week.

“Who’s going to check the record? What needs to be provided for the record of who’s vaccinated and who’s not vaccinated?” he asks, adding, “We don’t know.”

Under TransLink’s new policy, all of its employees will have to be vaccinated by the end of November.
