COVID-19: B.C. records nine deaths, 580 cases

VANCOUVER (NEWS 1130) — It’s been another deadly day B.C., as nine people who tested positive for COVID-19 passed away within 24 hours.

On Thursday, the province announced 580 new cases. Nearly half of those, 246, in the Fraser Health region.

Northern Health is accounting for the second-highest number of cases with 129. In a press conference Thursday, Provincial Health Officer, Dr. Bonnie Henry said the person who died in this region was in their 20s.

She is warning young people in the province that the Delta variant is to blame and is the reason why this age demographic is been severely impacted by this virus.

“If you are somebody who is young and healthy and thinks, I’m just going to get through this no problem. That’s not the case now.”

Henry says unvaccinated teens, people in their 20s, 30s and 40s are ending up in critical care.

In total, 2,042 people in B.C. have died from the virus since the start of the pandemic.

Of the 5,348 active cases, 378 people are in hospital and 153 are in intensive care.

There have been no new health care facility outbreaks in the last day — but there are 19 active across the province right now

Active health-care outbreaks:
Long-term Care: Willingdon Care Centre, Westminster House, The Residence in Mission, Magnolia Gardens, Manoah Manor, Good Samaritan Delta View Care Centre, Cherington Place, West Shore Laylum (Fraser Health); Cottonwoods Care Centre, Joseph Creek Care Village, Overlander, Village by the Station, Haven Hill Retirement Centre (Interior Health); and Wrinch Memorial Hospital (Northern Health).

Acute Care: University Hospital of Northern BC (Northern Health) and Tofino General Hospital (Island Health).

Of the people age 12 and up, 89 per cent of them have one dose of the vaccine — and just about 83 per cent have two doses.

Meanwhile, the province is cracking down on a majority of the Northern Health region with additional restrictions which will take effect midnight until at least Friday, Nov. 19.
