Evenings are a bit quieter around Vancouver’s West End these days, as the 9 O’Clock Gun in Stanley Park is on pause.
The city says one of the structures used to prepare the cannon for firing was damaged by a falling tree three weeks ago and until the building is fixed, it won’t be going off.
“Staff are working to repair the structure and have temporarily suspended the firing until the issue is resolved,” an email statement from the Park Board reads.

There’s no clear timeline for when those fixes might be done.

The cannon has been sitting in Stanley Park since 1894, according to the Park Board. At first, it was used to warn fishermen of the 6 p.m. Sunday close of fishing. However, it later started firing three hours later to help ships coming to port to set their clocks to local time.
