BC Ferries was going to add extra sailings over the next few days but is now scaling back plans due to a mechanical issue.
Extra sailings to the Tsawwassen-Swartz Bay route were in the works, given many people are taking Friday off because Thursday is a holiday for Remembrance Day.
But Deborah Marshall with BC Ferries says a gearbox issue with the Spirit of Vancouver Island means those extra sailings are now being cancelled.
“Unfortunately, it has taken a bit longer to fix that vessel than we had originally anticipated,” Marshall explains. “So we had scheduled some extra service today and tomorrow with a different vessel, the Coastal Celebration, but unfortunately, the Celebration is now having to cover for the Spirit of Vancouver Island.”
If you had booked a reservation on one of the cancelled sailings, you’ll be automatically refunded.
Sailings at the end of the evening on both Thursday and Friday will be added because the company expects additional traffic.
“That will be 11 p.m. from Swartz Bay as well as 1 a.m. from to Tsawwassen,” Marshall says.
Marshall expects that the Spirit of Vancouver Island will be back in service for the latter portion of the weekend.
In the meantime, she suggests customers check ferry conditions online or follow BC Ferries on Twitter for updated schedule information.
