A dangerous stunt that saw two people riding on top of a Canada Line train car has Transit Police out with a warning.
The incident was caught on camera, showing two individual sitting on top of a train car — seemingly taking photos of each other — at Lansdowne Station in Richmond.
Metro Vancouver Transit Police Const. Mike Yake says the incident took place just after 5 p.m. on Tuesday.
“Our officers attempted to intercept the train at Bridgeport Station but we later figured out that both the individuals actually got off the train at the stop before at Aberdeen,” he told CityNews.
Yake says this type of behaviour is concerning and obviously poses a risk to someone’s safety.
“When you take a look at it, the fact that an individual would put themselves on top of a SkyTrain, quite frankly it’s not only stupid but it also has a high likelihood of severe injury or even death.”
Comments on photos of the pair taking a joy ride are also critical of the act.
“It’s dangerous and encourages reckless behaviour of the others,” writes one Facebook user.
“You can’t fix stupid,” writes another.
While the stunt is quite rare on Metro Vancouver’s transit system, Yake is urging everyone who may be thinking of doing something like this or any other dangerous act to reconsider.
“In the past, we’ve seen people ride on the side of the SkyTrain or in between the cars, but from my time I’ve never heard of anyone actually riding on top of a SkyTrain,” he explained.
“As we know, these trains travel at a very high rate of speed. So if this train has to emergency break or if there’s a very strong gust of wind, there’s no doubt the individual on top of the train will be severely injured or dead.”
Anyone with information is asked to contact Transit Police.
