A well-known driving instructor on Vancouver Island has died, within days of learning he will not be charged with sexual assault.
Steve Wallace died of a heart attack at Royal Jubilee Hospital in Victoria, according to a statement from his wife sent to multiple media outlets.
Sexual assault charges were recommended against the 72-year-old owner of Wallace Driving School. The allegations were made by former driving school students.
He was set to appear in court on Thursday. However, the BC Prosecution Service confirms that two days earlier, a decision was made to not approve the charges.
“After a full review of the investigative material provided by the investigative agency the Crown Counsel concluded that the charge assessment standard had not been met for any criminal offence and no charges will proceed,” it said in a statement.
