Vancouver’s favourite barge now has its own live cam

You can now get your very own look at the barge that washed up on Sunset Beach last month, right from your home.

A livestream camera is set up right in front of the beached, unofficial Vancouver landmark, which has become quite the attraction around the West End.

Bluemist Design is behind the live look, offering a view of various locations around English Bay through its camera.

The barge came unmoored and ran aground amid a major atmospheric river that swept across the Lower Mainland in November. There had been concerns when it was adrift that it would run into the Burrard Street Bridge and everything in its path, prompting the city to close the crossing as a precaution. The closures have been lifted.

It eventually got stuck, and has been sitting at Sunset Beach since Nov. 15.

Initial attempts to remove it by tugboat were unsuccessful. In the weeks since, the barge has remained a centre piece of the park, drawing people from across the region to take photos with it in the background or just to take a look.

As of Monday afternoon, the City of Vancouver said it continues to work with Transport Canada to finalize the recovery plan for the barge.

“Its removal will be complex due to size, location and the weather. Public and environmental safety is our top priority,” the city said in a tweet.

The Canadian Coast Guard, meanwhile, says the owner of the barge is “responsible for securing, salvaging and arranging a tow for their barge.”

The barge was previously filled with wood chips. Transport Canada has said it does not pose a threat to the environment.

The structure has amassed quite a following since it first made its way onto Vancouver’s shore.

Parody Twitter accounts for the barge have been created, with thousands of followers.
