New Westminster councillor ‘surprised’ Mayor Cote won’t seek re-election

At least one New Westminster city councillor says they’re surprised by Mayor Jonathan Cote’s decision not to seek re-election.

Cote announced on Twitter Saturday that he would not be running in the upcoming 2022 municipal election, saying “it’s time to take on my next adventure.”

Cote took the time to outline some of his accomplishments, writing he’s proud of his city’s work on housing and climate action.

“I think this surprised a lot of people. I talked to [Cote] before the holidays and he did mention wanting to spend more time with his family,” said Councillor Chuck Puchmayr of Cote’s announcement, adding he has no plans on replacing him as mayor.

Puchmayr says, like Cote, he is proud of the change council has implemented and hopes to continue on that same note in 2022.

“We need to make sure the progress in the city continues…we need to look at making sure there is a strong group of progressive people on council.”

Moving forward, Puchmayr says he hopes to make affordable housing a priority this year.

“We are experiencing a homelessness crisis, there is a huge gap between those who have and those who have not.”

Meanwhile, Cote says he feels honored and proud to have been a part of the progress.

“I’ve really enjoyed the opportunity I’ve had in local politics but I don’t see politics in my future,” Cote said. “I do think in some ways my next chapter will involve building better cities.”

Municipal elections in B.C. will be held on Oct. 15, 2022.
