B.C. records 2,542 new COVID-19 cases, four more deaths

B.C. has recorded 2,542 new COVID-19 cases in the last 24 hours, according to an update from the province Monday.

More than half the cases — 1,458 — were in the Fraser health region. Island Health saw 360, Vancouver Coastal saw 329, Interior health saw 270 and there were 125 in Northern Health.

Four more people have passed away from the virus. On Friday there were 220 people in the hospital, that number has risen to 298. There are 86 people in the ICU, up from 73.

There have been nine new health- facility outbreaks, bringing the total up to 24, The new outbreaks are at: Surrey Memorial Hospital, The Residence in Mission, Czorny Alzheimer Centre, Hawthorne Lodge in Fraser Health; Joseph & Rosalie Segal Family Health Centre, Fraserview Retirement Community, Lakevew Care Centre in Vancouver Coastal Health; Mount Cartier Court in Interior Interior Health, and Victoria General Hospital in Island Health.

No update on the confirmed number of Omicron cases was provided, however, in a briefing Tuesday, Dr. Bonnie Henry said the variant is responsible for 80 per cent of new cases.

On the vaccination front, 83 per cent of those 5 and over have received two doses, while 88 per cent have received a single shot. Of those eligible, 20.7 per cent of British Columbians 12 and over have received a booster.
