Vancouver green bins might get a little ripe next month.
The city says due to a staffing shortage caused by the COVID-19 pandemic, it has to reduce February collections of the bins, which are used to dispose of food scraps, food-soiled paper, and yard waste.
“Our employees have worked extensive overtime hours over the past two months to maintain service, but the operational demand now exceeds the limit that we can safely cover through overtime,” reads a statement on the City of Vancouver website.
Instead of every week, the bins will be collected every other week, on the same day as regular garbage pickup.
The city says service should get back to normal at the end of February. It hopes, since we are still in the winter months, the impact won’t be as bad as in warmer seasons.
“An important consideration in this decision is that in winter, green bin volumes are much lower due to less yard waste and trimmings, and colder temperatures help to reduce green bin odour.”
