With Valentine’s Day right around the corner, most dating apps are trying to get people paired up, but a Vancouver company is offering a potential cash prize this February instead and putting a focus on mental health.
The team behind 6Degrees wants people to ditch the endless swiping on apps and put their emotional wellbeing first when it comes to relationships. That’s why the group created a scavenger hunt over the course of Valentine’s week.
From Feb. 14 to Feb. 20, the hunt, dubbed “Finding Mumu,” will have people going to Vancouver businesses to gather clues, all for a chance to win up to two prizes totalling $1,000.

Most importantly, 6Degrees co-founder Neil Saini says you don’t have to go with a date.
“Our whole focus is mental health. We recognize with Valentine’s Day, there can be a lot of pressure on people to be in a [relationship]. We just wanted to spread the message that at the end of the day, Valentine’s Day is just a made-up day. It’s okay if you just go and have fun with your friends instead,” said Saini.
6Degrees has partnered up with 10 businesses for the scavenger hunt. People taking part in the event will have access to some discounted activities and be able to enjoy food as they pick up their clues.
Saini says he hopes one day to be able to “cancel swiping.”
“We like users to take things a little slower and really get to know the person they’re talking to,” Saini said.
The main idea is “slow dating.”
“We’re trying to help people nurture themselves and their existing relationships that they have,” fellow Co-founder Melissa Mac added.
