Fuel prices are climbing and BC Ferries says it will impose a one per cent surcharge on ticket prices, effective March 1.
The corporation says the surcharge amounts to an extra 15 cents for an adult ticket and 55 cents for a vehicle on the main routes between Vancouver Island and the Mainland. On inter-island routes, it will amount to 5 cents for an adult and 20 cents for a vehicle.
BC Ferries notes the corporation doesn’t benefit financially from this increase.
Over the past 18 years, BC Ferries has been using a fuel rebate/surcharge mechanism to manage the volatility in the price of fuel. When fuel prices are lower, BC Ferries passes lower fuel prices on to customers through a fuel rebate. When fuel prices are higher, BC Ferries charges a fuel surcharge specifically designed to cover the additional cost of fuel,” a statement says.
“Despite initiatives to burn fuel more efficiently, a fuel surcharge is necessary at this time.”
The surcharge will not apply on runs between Port Hardy and Prince Rupert or the central coast, or between Prince Rupert and Haida Gwaii. The current fuel surcharge of 1.5 per cent on those routes will be removed at the beginning of next month.
