The B.C. Review Board has granted Allan Schoenborn the ability to request up to 28 days’ unescorted leave from a psychiatric hospital in Coquitlam, according to a spokesperson for the victims’ family.
“What we understand is that Schoenborn has the ability, at the discretion of the director of Colony Farm, to ask for 28 days. So it’s certainly not going to be automatic, but it’s another step in his liberties to get released from the hospital setting,” said Dave Teixeira on behalf of the family.
Schoenborn’s three kids –10-year-old Kaitlynne, eight-year-old Max, and five-year-old Cordon — were found dead in their home in Merritt. Schoenborn admitted to killing the children, but was found not criminally responsible under the Mental Health Act. He has been on forensic hold for 12 years.
From what we know, this decision will allow the 3x child killer to ask the Hospital Director for up to 28 days of unescorted leave into the community. The killer has poor social skills, no community supports and anger issues. This is not good for anyone.

Schoenborn was granted shorter unescorted leaves into the community in March 2020. That freedom was at the discretion of the Colony Farm director.
Teixeira says Schoenborn has a long history of violence, anger, and substance abuse issues and the family is concerned he could pose a risk to the community.

The B.C. Review Board’s decision notes Schoenborn is not allowed to possess or use any weapons or explosives while out on leave, nor consume alcohol or drugs unless it is a substance he’s been given approval for by a doctor.
The hospital director is also allowed to monitor his compliance through urine tests.
Schoenborn is also not allowed to contact the victim’s family and generally be on good behaviour while out in the community.

Friday’s decision is a disappointing one, Teixeira says. He believes review boards across Canada are more focused on getting patients out into the community, and “not necessarily get their patients better.”
