An uncle and nephew from Chilliwack are looking to buy some new rides after winning $8 million in the Lotto 6/49 jackpot.
John Bonner and his nephew Travis Bonner matched all six winning numbers — 16, 25, 31, 34, 40 and 42 with a quick pick ticket. John says his nephew talked him into splitting the tickets and the two started by buying a $30 weekly pack before doubling the amount the next week. He says he was just sitting down to breakfast when he decided to check his ticket.
“I was having my morning coffee and Travis was at work,” he said. “I go ‘Oh, I got one number, two, three.’ Well, I got all sick. So I needed to scan down and sure enough, somebody in Chilliwack, which is me, won.”
He says the pair wasn’t the only lucky ones in their family that night. John’s brother called to say he won $11,000 at the casino the night before.
“I said ‘I think I can do you one better,'” John said with a laugh, adding his brother was the first person he told about their winnings before he got a chance to call Travis.
Travis says he had a couple co-workers around when he got the good news.
“After the initial shock, it’s just numb and trying to figure out what’s going to happen next,” he said.
John says in addition to a pair of new vehicles, he plans to find a new place to live. Travis, meanwhile, is considering retiring early.
The winning ticket was purchased at Unsworth Market in Chilliwack.
