A section of the Vancouver Aquatic Centre is behind yellow caution tape after part of the building’s entrance overhang fell off overnight.

The building’s metal frame lay exposed Wednesday morning, and the building has been closed for an assessment.

“While we don’t know the exact time this happened, it was after business hours,” the Vancouver Park Board wrote in a statement, adding it likely happened after 10 p.m. “Thankfully no one was injured, but out of an abundance of caution, Parks and Recreation staff are closing the building for the remainder of the day while it undergoes an assessment.”

Visitors were initially told to use the side doors, but the facility later said “out of an abundance of caution” it was shutting down. The Park Board did not say if the facility would reopen by Thursday.

The aquatic centre in the heart of Vancouver is 48 years old.
