A youth-led demonstration took place at the Vancouver Art Gallery Friday. It’s was one of several taking place across Canada and worldwide in support of the climate strike.
The ‘Fridays for Future Climate’ movement has been active since 2018, when 15-year-old Swedish activist Greta Thunberg set up camp outside of Swedish Parliament, demanding action to address climate change.
In Vancouver, environmental activists will be focusing on fossil-fuel financers who protestors said are funding the climate crisis. Specifically, The Royal Bank of Canada, (RBC) is being called out by the group as a major fossil fuel funder.
Naisha Khan, one of the lead organizers of the group, said they are demanding RBC and other institutions stop funding the climate crisis.
“We really want to stop the money-pipeline that is directly funding the projects that are violating out future,” Khan said.
“RBC and banks in general are emblems of the extractive economy, and so their role in the climate crisis, I think they’ve been playing a very silent role for a long time. But, that will be no longer…business cannot continue as usual.”
